Simply put it is the best book ever written! The author is infallible. Everything you need to know about life is contained between the covers of this book. So it stands to reason that everything you need to know about business is also contained within.
In this book Larry Burkett takes the business principles in the Bible and shows you how to apply them to your business. He walks you through tough principled decisions that might seem to run counter to profits.
Larry Bossidy’s first job at GE was in the mail room. He rose through the ranks to become Jack Welch’s number one assistant and eventually became President and Chairman of the Board of Allied Signal. He turned Allied Signal around in 3 years by implementing the EXECUTION process he learned while at GE. In this book he first teaches you what execution really is and then he teaches you how to implement it in your organization. In my opinion this book is the 3rd most important business book you will ever read.
Eliyahu M. Goldratt is the leading expert on the Theory of Constraints. The goal is a business book written in novel form and I must say I found it to be a surprisingly good read. You get to ride along with a plant manager as he is taught The Theory of Constraints. After reading this book you will be able to quickly identify the bottlenecks in just about any process you have to administer.
Thomas Sowell is one of the great minds of our time. In this book he identifies how government and especially liberalism is failing us all. We govern by moving from crisis to crisis never taking the time to examine the consequences of the actions we take to solve said crisis. He outlines the pattern of failure.
Stage 1. THE “CRISIS”: Some situation exists, whose negative aspects the anointed propose to eliminate. Such a situation is routinely characterized as a “crisis” even though all human situations have negative aspects, and even though evidence is seldom asked or given to show how the situation at hand is either uniquely bod or threatening to get worse. Sometimes the situation described as a “crisis” has in fact already been getting better for years.
Stage 2. THE “SOLUTION”: Policies to end the “crisis” are advocated by the anointed, who say that these policies will lead to beneficial result A. Critics say that these policies will lead to detrimental result Z. The anointed dismiss these latter claims as absurd and “simplistic”if not dishonest.
Stage 3. THE RESULTS: The policies are instituted and lead to detrimental result Z.
Stage 4. THE RESPONSE: Those who attribute detrimental result Z to the policies instituted are dismissed as “simplistic”: for ignoring the “complexities” involved, as “many factors” went into determining the outcome. The burden of proof is put on the critics to demonstrate to a certainty that these policies alone were the only possible cause of the worsening that occurred.
Sowell examines The War on Poverty, Criminal Justice Reform, Sex Education, and many more “crisis” as they progressed through these 4 stages. The results are stunning and devastating. This book will change how you look at governance forever.
Another brilliant work by Thomas Sowell that should be required reading for ever employee. You just think you understand economics read this book and you will be able to apply economics to decisions you make every day. Also make everybody you know that is under 40 read it too, because I can guarantee you that they don’t understand anything about economics.
